Island to Island Brewery Image: Island to IslandĮstablished in 2015, Island to Island is Flatbush’s first brewery since Prohibition ended in the U.S. Try out some of their year-round Hazy IPAs like Trail Haze and Smoothie, or pick up one of their limited releases like the Cosmic Handshake or Mirror Image. The German Brauerstern was a mark of quality for German Brewers, and is the other inspiration for their starry logo. The Nautical Star printed on their cans is an old sailor’s symbol, meaning they have a mythical ability to guide ships home safely. They started canning their craft beers in 2010, distributing their mad scientist brews throughout the city. Sixpoint BreweryĪ post shared by Sixpoint Brewery Red Hook brewery founded in 2004 has become what they would call a “cult brewery.” They serve year-round Pilsners, Hoppy Lagers, and Gridlock Hazy IPAs. They aim to embrace “a culture of craft brewing that cares just as much about the product inside the glass as the people who drink it.” Located in Sunset Park, they opened in 2017, joining the Industry City hub. Go grab a drink while visiting the other wonders of Coney Island. They’re known for their Mermaid Pilsner and other classics like the Merman NY IPA and the Dreamland Session Sour. They had to rebuild in 2015 after Hurricane Sandy caused irreparable damage to their original location. One of the most notable things to do when visiting here is taking one of their Small Batch Tours. They’re located in Williamsburg but their beers have been distributed around the world. Perhaps the most widely-known brewery in Brooklyn, the brand was established in 1996. Here’s a guide of where to go and what to drink. Whether you live in Brooklyn, or any of the other four boroughs, visiting these breweries makes for a fun outing - especially on a hot summer day. Other brewers followed and, these days, Brooklyn is home to eight major companies, and you can visit all of them. By 1996, Brooklyn Brewery opened its doors and the borough’s beer industry was revived again after 20 years. The trend clicked and microbreweries began cropping up throughout the United States. So did a majority of beer drinkers across the country. Hobbyists and entrepreneurs, alike, had a taste for something different. The age of micro-brewing came soon after. However, all the famous name brand plants were shut down by 1976. The borough is a major powerhouse when it comes to beers. Although these types of beers are normally thought of as being predominately hop-driven, we found that the yeast had the biggest impact on the end product. We experimented with different hops, yeast strains, and processes before we settled on this recipe. This beer is the culmination of quite a few experimental batches. This brew is the end result of lots of recipe-tweaking and experimentation. These two hops play well off one another with Citra (from TV Hops in Wilder, ID) bringing the kiwi/lime/tropical fruit notes and Amarillo (from Virgil Gamache Farms in Yakima, WA) offering a bright and fresh orange peel character. Speaking of those Amarillo and Citra hops - what is the interplay between those two varietals and what does each hop bring to the beer? We ferment this beer with a unique blend of yeast and hop it with Amarillo and Citra to really bring out the tropical flavors. It’s a full-bodied and hazy IPA brewed with a decent charge of wheat. In the past, we have brewed beers like Gridlock solely as one-off specialty release beers, so this is a nice addition to our year-round lineup. Where does this beer fall on the spectrum of hazy brews? Gridlock is a Hazy IPA, a style that has seen a meteoric rise in popularity in recent years. Malts: Pilsner, Pale Wheat Malt, Rice Hulls A multifaceted malt bill produces a smooth, full-bodied brew - bumper-to-bumper deliciousness. Gridlock is a debut Hazy IPA offering a tropical traffic jam of flavor, the byproduct of heavy whirlpool additions of Amarillo and Citra.
